CD Reviews

This Gully shouldn't stay in the gully
H. C. Willers | Veenendaal, The Netherlands | 04/07/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is my second Rob Jungklas album. It's heavy stuff. Torment is the word that comes to mind. Those songs "John Doe" and "Burn it away", I just can't stop listening to them. It's certainly not a cheerful album but if you like screaming guitars or mercyless drums or an atmosphere of suspense this album is a must! I won't say it's better than Arkadelphia, the one before Gully, but that is mainly because Arkadelphia is so dear to me.

Another good effort from Jungklas

"One has to wonder about the world Rob Jungklas lives in. It must be scary for him. But his apocolyptic nightmares are definitely for our benefit musically. He's out there, fresh, entertaining, a little nuts -- and musically top notch. This one may not quite live up to his masterpiece "Arkadelphia," but it's still plenty good, with spooky blues and a few more ballads. Let's hope his religious neurosis keeps inspiring him -- and more often. Can't wait for the next disk."
Outstanding

"To my ears, even better than the great ARKADELPHIA. Less muddy/murky, sonically superior but no less dark/tragic than ARKADELPHIA. Only the closer, "Mule," offers anything in the way of optimism. But that's the world Jungklas seems to live in, and that's OK with me as long as he continues to release albums of this quality.

Recommended to fans of Tom Waits, 16 Horsepower and Jim White...especially Jim White, who seems to occupy a similar space of spiritual obsession/deprivation."
