Severely Missed, Always Cherished
Kevin Killian | San Francisco, CA United States | 02/10/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Rita Hunter was a goddess of the opera, and the woman for whom Wagner wrote the part of Brunhilde in the Ring. Well, not really, but when you saw her you were in heaven. TALL POPPIES, the label, has put out some good albums, and this one is one of the best. Not only do you hear a bit of Wagner, but Rita Hunter could also sing Puccini and Bizet like an angel.

She was always good at encores and I remember her singing, "Waltzing Matilda" (not on this LP). You know what's on here that's great--the old chestnut from the Norma Shearer picture, "Smilin' Through" (by Victor Herbert). Oh, what a voice and range she had. It is a shame that the gods of heaven plucked her out of our lives in 2001 and brought her to Mount Olympus to sing for them there as she did for so many years here as one of the stars of the legendary ENO mounting of the Ring Cycle."
