Four Operas from Rimsky-Korsakov
Eric S. Kim | Southern California | 06/15/2009
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This box set features four operas from Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. They are: Boyarinya Vera Sheloga, May Night, Snow Maiden, and The Golden Cockerel. All four have been previously released separately by Capriccio, and now they have been put together. They are not "boxed" like RCA's Complete Collections, however. Each opera is packaged in their original serparate designs and are just piled together in one box. You might have trouble finding a bit of unused space in your collection. But anyhow, the performances here are quite good. The orchestras are well-tuned, the conductors know the score very well, and the soloists make only a few mistakes. The sound isn't your typical Decca quality, but it's better than average. Librettos are nowhere to be found, so you will have no idea what they are saying if you don't know the Russian language.

All in all, this would have been a great box set if it weren't for the sub-par packaging, the average liner notes, and the lack of librettos."
