A Delightful Missing Link
Dr Tom | Boston, MA | 07/19/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In the various approaches to the study of Western music's history, the transition from Baroque to Classical is often glossed over, either by simplification (e.g., only invoking J.S. Bach's sons) or omission (e.g., moving straight from J.S. Bach to F.J. Haydn). This CD presents a wonderful opportunity to hear some captivating and generally ignored music that could easily fill in as a "missing link" between the two styles. Richter's Grandes Symphonies are characterized by the adventurous and sometimes jarring harmonic and melodic practices of the Baroque contained within the well-defined, highly symmetrical phrases and forms that were hallmarks of the early Classical period. The music is not only fascinating as a prime specimen of stylistic transition, it is also well-crafted, often truly inspired, and a joy to listen to.

The Helsinki Baroque Orchestra plays with spirit and delicacy, breathing life and artistry into music that could very easily have been played only "by the notes". Even the recording quality seems above par. I recommend this disc highly, and can't wait for the next set!"
