CD Reviews

The gamut of Strauss's orchestral genius.
darragh o'donoghue | 03/21/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"this extraordinary bargain double CD offers testament to the orchestral versatility, virtuosity and magical intensity of Richard Strauss, ranging from the relatively unknown to the canonic. There are two tone poems - the mercurial and inventive 'Till Eulenspiegel', a tribute to a legendarily impish German subversive; and 'Don Juan', lush and yearning, belonging to an earlier, pre-Wagnerian age of Romanticism; two huge symphonies - the mountainous 'Alpine Symphony', surging you to the top of the world, and yet crashing with a neurotic organ when at its most sublime; and the gorgeous 'Sinfonia Domestica', a musical portrait of the composer's family life, a sustained epiphany of love and melody; and the relatively small-scale 'Suite for 13 instruments', juvenelia dismissed by Strauss, but intricately aspiring to the condition of fugue. De Waart may not be renowned as the great modern Straussian, but I treasure his 'Rosenkavelier', and he effortlessly conjures the required splendour and rush here."
The best Strauss deal you can get...
Ethan Sobotta | Seattle, WA | 12/04/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Come on, where else are you going to get this much Strauss (that sounds GOOD) for $12? The Minnesota Orch. sounds lush and precise as always, and the interpretations are very good, as well. No other way to say it: if it says "Minnesota Orchestra" on it, it should be on your CD rack."
Brass!
J. Callahan | Minnesota | 01/03/2006

"Besides the fact that the MN Orchestra does a wonderful job with this piece, the brass will absolutely blow you away. If you are a fan of trumpet playing at all, I urge you to buy this CD and listen to "On the Glacier." Manny Laureano, the principal trumpet, does a sensational job with the whole movement."
