CD ReviewsSmall, But Solidly Built Michael E. Hund | Buffalo, NY United States | 02/13/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "The unique talent of Ray Charles is impossible to capture on an 11-track CD. However, this small, but solidly built, sample of his early to mid-1960s output is a pretty decent place to begin.
The CD starts off with his 1962 #1 pop hit, "I Can't Stop Loving You", a sweepingly orchestrated cover song that puts Ray's voice front and center. The strings behind him are fairly muted after the introduction, although the somewhat cloying backup vocals are pretty typical of the time. Track #3, "You Don't Know Me", was a number #2 hit for Ray in 1962 as well. His strong, heart-felt cover of "Over The Rainbow", track 2, join with track 7, the big-band "Busted" and track 9, a soulfully countrified "That Lucky Old Sun", from the 1963 album release of 'Ingredients In A Recipe For Soul'. "That Lucky Old Sun" comes off as the powerhouse track on this CD compilation. Ray's voice takes us all higher. "Georgia On My Mind" was, of course, his first crossover #1 Pop hit, topping the charts in November of 1960. If you were only allowed one Ray Charles song to remember him by, this should be the one. Track #5, "What'd I Say" was recorded first by Ray Charles in 1959, however this version is from a 1965 Live concert album, and really captures the R&B excitement that Ray could bring to his shows. No over-dubs, no canned voices. Pure Ray. Track #6, "Cryin' Time", a partial duet, went to #6 on the charts in 1966. "Here We Go Again", track #8, released in 1967, is a singularly amazing duet with Norah Jones. Country, Pop, Soul, R&B, and Gospel have never blended so well. The final two tracks are from 1962. "Unchain My Heart", with it's more Motown-ish backup vocals, went to #9 on the charts, while "Your Cheatin' Heart" showcases Ray's vocal and piano chops in an orchestrated Country vein. All-in-all, an excellent starter-sampler of the late, great, Ray Charles. This singular spirit could do it all, and more. Ray Charles' genius should never fade away. This CD is highly recommended as a good place to be introduced to Mr. Ray Charles. " |
