A triumph by the early Gilels

"I actually went out on a limb in giving this a five star performance yet Gilels prevents the possibility of any less. The primary precautions a potential buyer should take into consideration is 1) These are 1954 & 1955 mono recordings and 2) The orchestra is generally middle of the road and the recording features an apparent hampered projection of their acoustics. Gilels is right in front, in excellent sound for mono--far better than the mono Furtwangler received with the Bayreuth 9th on EMI. However, the displacement of the orchestra--or whatever is seemingly dragging the projection of their sound away--does reduce its effect, particularly in soft passages in which the orchestra seems non-existent "

Excellent Saint-Saens 2nd by Gilels

"I have to chime in with others that, though the recorded sound here is a bit dated, Gilels really displays incredible pianism. This is far and away the best recording of the Saint-Saens 2nd Concerto I have heard due to the incredible fireworks and compelling way in which it is played by Gilels. There are many beautiful renditions of this concerto but this interpretation definitely favors the weighty heroic aspects of the music. Gilels' unbelievable breakneck speed and accuracy combined with his legendary touch make this a truly amazing recording. This is somewhat akin to Michelangeli's stunning Grieg Piano Concerto performance with Burgos in 1965 in that it redefined that concerto's possibilities for me. By the way, listen for Gilels coming in too early and then correcting himself at 3:38 in the 3rd movement. Was it a short lapse of memory or was the adrenaline flowing? Great stuff."
