Schumann wrote more than 250 art songs and the composer himself admitted that he considered development in this genre to be the only signifi cant musical progress possible after Beethoven. Schumann took over the form of the song cycle from his predecessors Beethoven and Schubert: outstanding cycles are Song Cycle op. 39 (Eichendorff), Woman`s Life and Love op. 42 (Chamisso) and A Poet`s Love op. 48 (Heine) as well as the 12 Poems op. 35 (Kerner). These recordings were made between 1943 and 1957 and feature the genre`s outstanding performers including Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, G?rard Souzay, Hans Hotter, Peter Anders, Irmgard Seefried, Emmi Leisner and Tiana Lemnitz.
