These period-instrument Mozart performances have been reduced to midprice status, perhaps a reflection of the initial critical reaction to the disc. While "authentic" in their sound and in the pitch to which the instruments are tuned, these performances are so rhythmically oriented, and so unlyrical, that they seem inappropriate for Mozart. This kind of approach might make sense for Bach, but Ensemble 415 seems to have the wrong ideas about Mozart. --Leslie Gerber
