CD Reviews

Two bland discs for the price of one

""Music from the Coffee Lands" and "Music from the Chocolate Lands" are among Putumayo's weakest offerings. This Putumayo's first boxed set,and they went for its most tepid albums.

"Music from the Coffee Lands" is a decaffeinated compilation. It's hardly a rousing morning brew,or flavorful as a mocha. Its highlights are the great Afro-Peruvian singer Susana Baca, the acoustic music of Ernest Ranglin, and the Hawaiian music of James 'Bla' Pahinui. There is also great African music from Samite of Uganda,Thomas Mapfumo of Zimbabwe, and Ayub Ogada, who belongs to the Afro-Celt Sound System.Ayub Ogada's haunting "Kothbiro" was also on the soundtrack of "Hotel Rwanda." The rest of the compilation is Buena Vista Club-style easy listening, and boring.

"Music from the Chocolate Lands" is neither as flavorful as Mexican mole (a chocolate sauce made with spices),nor as delicious as a cheap Hershey's bar.The songs lack variety. However, there are a few highlights-again the Afro-Peruvian singer Susana Baca, the wonderful Indian singer Susheela Raman, and Teresa Bright from Hawaii, whose lively song is accompanied with native percussion.Marcantonio from Northeast Brazil provides a beautiful acoustic song.Chocolate Armenteros provides a fitting finale about the deliciousness of chocolate.Too bad the rest of the disc doesn't match up to these.

The "bonus disc" is actually the 2006 CD Sampler that's usually promotional (I got one when I bought two Putumayo CDs,and received the 2006 sampler as a free gift)

"Taste of Putumayo" makes for a so-so trio;it's the bland worldbeat they play at Starbucks.I would've paired "Music from the Wine Lands"& "Music from the Tea Lands",complete with free tea.Putumayo has done much,MUCH better."

"I bought this "twofer" because I enjoy the Putumayo label immensely and the interesting musical offerings provide accessible world music to the casual listener without being too intense and it was a great price. This set did not disappoint. If you enjoy easy to listen to world music, I think you will enjoy this. Friends are always asking "who is this? or what are we listening to?" and I'm always delighted to share these musical "journeys". I think if you have an appreciation for world music this will taste just fine!"
