CD Reviews

Another "Wow" from Chailly

"This recording of several of Puccini's orchestral works performed by the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin under the direction of Riccardo Chailly is my first introduction to the music of Puccini; and what an introduction! Just so that it is clearly established, this disc contains a fantastic collection of music filled with hauntingly beautiful melodies that are both irresistable and unforgettable. The first several tracks are truly exciting and full of "big" sound. The later tracks are more refined in sound, but are terrifically orchestrated. Perhaps what surprised me the most was the quality of the sound; it's unbelievable! This particular recording was made in the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin during September of 1982 and yet, it sounds as if the orchestra were sitting right in front of you! Amazing sound, definitely top-notch. As far as the level of interpretation, with Chailly, as always, it's second to none.

A terrific recording full of wonderful music matched with unparalleled sound quality and first-rate performance; excellent buy!"
Puccini For Orchestral Fans

"I've never been a fan of opera. I find it to be one of the most unsatisfying musical mediums in classical music. I don't mind choral singing, I just can't stomach operatic vocals. This Riccardo Chailly Decca recording of Puccini's orchestral music, however, is exactly what the doctor ordered. Puccini wrote very beautiful music, but one who doesn't appreciate opera, like me, would never know because the singing, which for some can tune out, I cannot.

That said, this is some very melodic and lyrical music. Puccini was ingenius at writing melodies. The way the music just followed this ebb and flow type of movement. It just washes over you. I'm not an expert on Puccini's music or even that knowledgeable about it. If you enjoy Romantic music, then you're going to love this recording. The audio quality is excellent and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra play fantastic.

For those of you who can't get into opera or don't care much about it, then I point you to this release. Highly recommended."
