CD Reviews

Hits and Rarities for Prince
Mr. Richard D. Coreno | Berea, Ohio USA | 01/18/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is an interesting - and underrated - soundtrack/collection in the vast Prince catalog. The 13 tracks clock in at 61:13, with some of the material dating back to 1982.

Released in March 1996 it follows a trend Prince set forth in the late-1980s for soundtrack projects; dig around the vault for unreleased songs and/or toss in a few previously-released, but re-edited, tracks. This could be titled, "hits and rarities."

There is material from Vanity 6 (the clubland classic, Nasty Girl), The Family (The Screams of Passion) and New Power Generation (newly written for the soundtrack and single, Girl 6, and Count the Days) to complement the offerings from Prince. Nasty Girl was also issued as a single nearly 15 years after it was a hit for Vanity 6 and the vibe remains amazingly fresh. As long as clubs have DJ's spinning the beat, Vanity 6 will be on the playlist for a new audience.

This is a neat retrospective into Prince's many projects and is as much a soundtrack on facets of his career as it is a solid soundtrack to the film that was directed by Spike Lee."
Prince and his revolution
The Far Side | Houston | 06/24/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Hated the movie but love the soundtrack. If you are a fan of Prince and some of the spin-off groups this CD is worth getting. The best cuts are the very hard to get "Screams of Passion" by the Family and the sexy "Erotic City" that still has folks trying to figure out the f-word that is used in the lyrics."
