Synopsis

Gieseking was an extraordinary stylist and perhaps the century's greatest sonorist. His interpretations of Debussy were justly celebrated. Unhappily, the technology EMI possessed at the time these renditions of the Preludes were captured, in 1953 and 1954, does only marginal justice to him. At least the recordings were made in a reverberent acoustic well suited to the music, and the tone that comes through, while thin at the top, is solid. --Ted Libbey

CD Reviews

Legendary
04/05/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Gieseking paints these little gems in the most subtle colors with no excessive lingering over textures here and no fuss. Even if other artists have brought more pianistic refinement, Gieseking is still revelatory in terms of naturalness and spontaneity. The relative lack of immediacy in the (mono) sound only seems to enhance the mystery. This complete set certainly is legendary--something of a reference point, in fact--and fits on one mid-priced CD, too."
Sublime performance by a master

"Gieseking had no peer in his performances of Debussy's piano works. While there are a number of fine performances of these miniatures; Gieseking reaches the heights of sublimity in nuance, tonal quality, interpretation. A first choice for these works."
