Antonin Kubalek, a Czech-Canadian pianist, is a remarkable player of Romantic piano music. His performance of Carnaval captures the wide variety of musical moods without any exaggerations or distortions, one of the better performances I've heard of this popular work. Kinderszenen is more restrained music, and Kubalek plays it with a narrower range, never risking monotony. The other two pieces are late Schumann; Song of Dawn is his last completed piano work. These two are beautifully played. The sound of Kubalek's Hamburg Steinway in the beautiful space of the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall is a further virtue of this fine CD. --Leslie Gerber

Romantic Schumann

"Mr. Gould loved Kubalek, playing Schumann or Brahms. And really, his performance is more than beautiful. I appreciate especially his Carnival, which is greatest recording of the cycle, which I ever heard. At the same level as Rachmaninov and better than Arrau (maybe just my feeling, I like Arrau very much, of course, but...). Strongly recommended. This is the finest introduction to Schumann's piano music."
