It is a pity that Van Cliburn's various recordings of this music have not been consolidated on a single CD, for they are among his best efforts. There is warmth in his manner, which comes out in supple, graceful phrasing, and remarkable beauty of tone and touch. These are lyrical readings that project a deep sense of nostalgia, even if the melancholy is not as bleak as in Glenn Gould's utterly northern accounts. --Ted Libbey
