CD Reviews

Bach y vivaldi geniales
felipe | Chile | 12/01/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

Best Performance. Best Feeling- de profundis!

"I have five different Recordings of these two Works: Bach's Magnificat, and Vivaldi's Gloria etc. The One that I most adore is the Performance done by the Gächinger Kantorei Stuttgart; the Bach Collegium Stuttgart; La Grande Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy, with the Conductors, Helmuth Rilling, and Jean-Claude Malgoire; plus, Raphaél Passaquet, Arleen Auger,Ann Murray,Helen Watts, Adalbert Kraus, Philippe Huttenlocher,Wolfgang Schöne,Mary Burgess,Jocelyn Chamonin and Carolyn Watkinson. What a stupendous Congruence of Talent to deal with a Subject that is indeed de Profundis (Track 18 most notably!!) Naturally, the whole Range of Emotions that the two "Twins" of Genius, namely Bach and Vivaldi is gloriously done!! The Singers, in my Opinion, are not merely technically proficient but had or have Reverence for the Subject Matter!! I'd love to have at least four more Copies of this specific CD! I only hope that Sony Classical/Sony Music re-releases this Recording!! Everyone has an Opinion, I have mine!! This One is the greatest!!"
Just awful.

"OK, to be fair, it's a good performance/recording of Bach's Magnificat (that's why two stars instead of one). But I bought it to be able to listen to Vivaldi's Gloria, and that performance is just awful. The wind instruments play consistently off-key; there's one movement where I can't even tell if it's major or minor. I guess I'm naive; I didn't think performances this bad got made into commerically available recordings. I listened to clips, and assumed that they were typical of the quality on this CD; but all the clips are from the Bach Magnificat, and I had no way of knowing that Gloria would be this bad. Buy it if you're looking for a reasonably priced recording of the Magnificat and don't care about the Gloria."
