Synopsis

Album Description
Born April 10, 1933, in the Bronx, New York, USA. Aries: Sun conjunct Venus & Uranus, Moon in opposition, Leo rising. Education as composer; musical scores evolving into pure graphics, verbal instructions turning into poetry. Interest in theory led to the profession of teaching--in middle school and university. Works performed in 32 countries, 100 places in North America, and 147 locales in New York City. As pianist and trombonist played the works of many contemporary and classical composers. Has been a member of historic groups such as Fluxus, Judson Dance Theater, Tone Road Concerts, The Something Else Press, Sounds Out of Silent Spaces, Frog Peak Composers? Collective, Experimental Intermedia Foundation. A lifelong interest in both spirit and body has led to meditative and action improvisations; much work with dancers. Published in numerous poetry magazines; many gallery and museum exhibitions, most recently in Italy. This man and his work represent the real ?speculum musicae? of the past 40 years. The example of his music embodies a lifelong commitment to an integral radicalism. . . . this is a venerable tradition that Philip has written so eloquently about, and continued in his music. A tradition that stems from ?Charlie? Ives through John Cage and Lou Harrison. All of these composers would ultimately admonish us to do one thing: to open our ears--and LISTEN!

CD Reviews

Great Fluxus pianism!
Tom Furgas | Youngstown, OH United States | 12/01/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It is very nice to have this great overview of the piano music of Philip Corner. There are not enough recordings of Fluxus artists around, and this one is a real gem. Corner himself performs the works here, and they range from aphoristic miniatures, just seconds long, to long minialist-inspired masterworks. Great recordings, great presentation, and a great addition to anyone's Fluxus collection (especially considering the dearth of material out there even today; Fluxus should be much more well known by this time.)"
