CD Reviews

Brilliant companion to earlier Downtown compilation
Peter Durward Harris | Leicester England | 07/13/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In 1999, British label Sequel issued a double CD covering Petula's best years. Although it contained 50 tracks, it did not include I couldn't live wthout your love. Now I know why. They saved it for this second double CD, also 50 tracks. This collection includes a third version of Downtown (a 1976 disco recording) to contrast the two versions on the first collection, plus a number of other songs which were hits in Britain, America or elsewhere but were not included in the first volume (including the American hit The cat in the window and the Australian hit I want to sing with your band). Also included are a number of cover versions. There are stunning versions of the Beatles classics I want to hold your hand and Fool on the hill. San Franciso (be sure to wear flowers in your hair) may not seem like an obvious song for Petula to record, but she clearly enjoyed the song - her version is every bit as good as Scott McKenzie's original. There are plenty of intersting original songs too - many of them are known only to Petula fans, though they deserve to be more widely known. An essential collection for any Petula fan, or any fan of Sixties pop generally, this double CD contains a fair number of obscure but high quality tracks among the better known ones to provide endless listening pleasure."
