The artistry, genius and drama of Peter Nero

"Listening to this CD, "Hail The Conquering Nero/New Piano In Town," one cannot help reveling in the artistry, genius and drama of Peter Nero. Very recently an adherent to Mr. Nero, I must say unequivocally that he is, by far, the most talented pianist in the genre and one of the most talented and influential of the last forty-five years.

The performances here are without question some of the most moving playing applied to these standards, displaying resoundingly virtuosic genius, elegant and eloquent, at once, conveying a craft so involving that applauding them will seem natural, and tears may creep out of the corners of your eyes at the most stirringly expressive, like Londonderry Air, Maria, and Bess, You Is My Woman. Others like Continental Holiday (written by Peter Nero), Mack the Knife, Stormy Weather and Three Coins in a Fountain will shed new light and bring new life to these classics, keeping them evergreen. All selections on this CD are sometimes witty, always wonderful renditions. Peter Nero shows talent and genius everywhere, in every phrase.

Some pianists of note last years, other artful pianists last decades. Rare, indeed, are those who can significantly and successfully span half a century in their own lifetime. This CD reveals why Peter Nero's talent and genius has lasted so long and why the recordings on this CD, some 45 years old, are as vibrant and refreshing today as they were when they won him Best New Recording Artist in 1961.

"I orginally bought Hail the Conquering Nero back in 1963. What a masterful work; a truly great mix of jazz-flavored renditions as well a soft and mellow sounds. A truly great album and now a truly wonderful CD! Peter Nero is a tremendous talent who should receive more acclaim as this music is testament too."
