(5 out of 5 stars)

"Peter Hurford is an outstanding virtuoso organist, and nowhere is it better demonstrated than in this CD. Gigout's Scherzo from Dix Pieces is presented in an especially delightful version, moving along rapidly and merrily. Franck's Chorales are gorgeous and registered wonderfully. The 2 Mendelssohn Prelude and Fugues (C Min and D Min) are amazingly played. Brahms' Chorale Preludes are given the appropriate solemnity. Reger's Introduction and Passacaglia in D Minor is given justification as a dramatic, sonorous masterpiece. Liszt's B.A.C.H and Vierne's Final from the 1st Symphony are stunning feats of virtousity. Suite Gothique is appropriately registered (Priere a Notre Dame is a bit too fast) and unfolds nicely in the exciting toccata. Berceuse (Vierne) is a beautiful, gentle piece presented in a lovely, calming fashion. The Allegro from Widor's 6th Symphony is well-done
The biggest weak point of this CD, ironically, is Widor's ever-popular Toccata. Hurford fails to bring the life to it that is needed and it tends to sound like a metronomical bore. HOWEVER, the rest is wonderful!!! Buy this CD - it's worth it!
