"Perhaps my favorite of the 90's Hammill output, Fireships is an excellent album, part of his 'Be Calm' series. Hammill can scream and wail with the best of them on his 'loud' albums, but when it comes to the softer stuff, he excels at that also. Strongest tracks are surely 'His Best Girl', 'Curtains' and 'I will find you'. 'Curtains' proves that Hammill's storytelling talent is not lost simply because of the more direct, soft acoustic approach. I prefer this album to some of its followers such as 'Everyone you hold' and 'This'. A nice album to put on and sing along to, when you're in the mood."

"Hailing from England, i first encountered Mr. Peter Hammill thru his band-THE EXCELLENT Van der Graaf Generator.......early 1970's..... i then followed closely his fascinating SOLO career ..i think perhaps his early solo albums (Fool'smate,Chameleon,Silent corner,e.t.c.) probably remain his BEST).HOWEVER!!!!.....THIS PARTICULAR ALBUM..."FIRESHIPS", was an absolute Revelation to my eager ears!!!!!Surely Peter Hammill's finest album in 2 decades!!The whole texture of this album is GORGEOUS!!..."I will find you" -the track opener ,is a fabulous catchy tune/lyric(unforgettable),"Curtains"..what amazing lyrics..."Oasis", my own favourite here,..P.H. excels in musical mastery here..what other British singer/songwriter EVER sounded this good AND freaky!!!...The whole of this c. d. is phenomenal,to my ears, the closer.."Gaia" ,this song puts a lump in my throat,truly an incredible Space-song PAR EXCELLENCE!!tHIS ,THEN -"fIRESHIPS" IS ONE OF THE Peter Hammill classic albums-truly beautiful!...BUY!!!!"

"Fireships is a very fine, "be calm" CD. One of his best 'easy going' records, along with "Everyone you hold" and "As close as this". Great compositions and arrangements, and of course, his impressive passionate voice. Every CD he delivers is a different piece of art."
