CD Reviews

MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE ALBUM
Joe Marquez | Pollock Pines, CA | 11/21/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I purchased the LP in a large second-hand shop in 1958. I was surprised to find that Bill Perkins' private ink stamp, which contained his personal address, was located on the back of the album. Since I was a huge fan of Conte Candoli, I purchased the record. I couldn't have been more pleased with the sounds. These guys really cooked! Candoli and Perkins were Kenton sidemen in the past and I knew of the others, particularly Pete Jolly and Mel Lewis, because of my strong love for West Coast Jazz. In my opinion, this album stands out as the epitome' of this jazz genre. It swings, is always melodic, and the improvisational work by all is absolutely superb. Because I have, as I mentioned, the LP (which is, incidentally, very worn) I was very pleased to find a domestic CD(RCA)available on this website which was digitally remastered. This is my "island record.""
