Synopsis

Except for the Poulenc, all of this music was written for violin. The Sonata by Fauré is the most difficult piece here, but Paula Robison manages to make it sound thoroughly convincing on the flute. She needs the collaboration of a first-rate pianist like Laredo to make this piece come off, since it takes a lot of outgoing romanticism from both players. The Poulenc Sonata, the work of a master songwriter, with its lovely, flowing melodies winds up having an emotional impact surprising for such a brief piece. Ravel's piece sounds convincingly Spanish here, and don't overlook the exquisite little piece by the great, short-lived Lili Boulanger. --Leslie Gerber
