A Rightful Tribute to The Rage
05/20/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The people who compiled and packaged this worth-every-dollar Patti Page retrospective really knew their Patti. These are all memorable and significant recordings, many of them not widely known and long unavailable. At last Patti gets her rightful tribute as a great maker of hits but also a great popular singer (and jazz and country). The selection of recordings is amazingly on the mark (only Patti afficionados would know, for example, about "Indiscreet") and the fabulous book with the set is a model of completeness, intelligence and good taste. This is a keeper to play over and over and finally, at last, Patti Page's talents and accomplishments are placed in their rightful perspective."
50 YEARS CAPTURED IN A 4 CD BOX SET
William W. Busse | Fairmont, MN USA | 02/11/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It is extremely difficult to capture 50 years in the record business on 4 cds each containing 20 cuts. Mercury has made a great effort to show the range of Patti Page...selecting nearly 40 hits from more than 100 chart makers, including some of her very best jazz recordings and country songs from the 40s, 50s,60s, 70s. For those who love Patti Page it is the quality of her voice, her flawless singing of songs of every genre that have kept them fans....many for the entire length of her career. The gold and platinum hits have been available throughout the years but the great readings of jazz standards have been unavailable since the release dates of the original lps. These songs alone make this a very worthwhile package. The disc of country songs gives us an overview of the changes which took place in that market from the late 40s to the 70s. The many changes in country music are readily apparent when you hear one of Patti's first country hits(multitrack) from the 40s, MONEY,MARBLES & CHALK, GO ON HOME from the 60s and A WOMAN LEFT LONELY from the 70s. One should not overlook the book contained in this package.....many photos never published commercially plus a career retrospective, complete Mercury discography and a song by song annotation. Patti recorded for Columbia and Epic in the 60s and part of the 70s so that material is not included. Later country hits on Plantation and Avco are not included. What you are getting in this box set is what Mercury, Patti's fan club and Patti herself consider the best of the 900+ songs recorded for Mercury that have sold more than 100 million copies. If you are a Patti fan you already know you need this in your collection. If you are a student of the music of the 50s this is a must."
More Celebration, please!

"I was sorry to see that this album, PATTI PAGE: A GOLDEN CELEBRATION, had gone out of print when I'd decided to start working on my collection of Patti Page music, as it's far and away the best collection of her work yet offered.I have since seen this album advertized on HalfEbay and other "bargain" sites for upwards of $100. I eventually got a copy at Ebay, but only after having been outbid on about half a dozen copies. There is really a high demand for this collection, and the producers should give serious consideration to reissuing it.The entire package is of the highest quality with 4 picture disks positioned inside the front and back covers of a beautifully designed biography full of color photos and listing a complete discography, recording dates and much more. And the quality of the recordings is top-notch as well. The selections are well chosen & divided into 4 categories (1 category per cd): Early Hits, Later Hits, Country, Jazz/Standards. This is the ideal starter collection for any Patti Page fan and truly deserves to be once again made available to all."
