CD Reviews

Bad Sound Quality (again) -shame on Majestic Rock label
L. Tucker | NY | 02/17/2006

"Well it does appear that Majestic Rock (re-issue label) have simply repackaged their awful sounding re-issues of Pat Traver's first four albums into a boxed set. Shame on you Majestic Rock!

With this boxset limited to only 1000 copies, I'll be surprised if they can sell any of them. :(

A real shame too as these albums are simply too good to only afford them half-baked remastering (actually poor mastering to the point of compromising the sound from the original master tape itself). My record albums sound better! These discs are riddles with static (a result of cutting the 2 track DAT too hot from the original master tape).

There are several compilations out from Polydor (Pat's original label) that sound fine (much better than this box set). There's also an EXELLENT 2 disc compilation out from Repertoire called "Rock Solid -The Essential Pat Travers starting at $15.56! 32 tracks from his 9 Polydor albums (1976 -1984) all digitally remastered, packaged in a beautiful tri-fold digi-pak with awesome linear notes and pictures. Awesome Sound Quality, Highly recommended. :)

REMASTERED?

"I WAS HAPPY TO SEE THESE ALBUMS REMASTERED. I AM A BIG P.T. FAN AND LOOKED FORWARD TO THIS SET. UNFORTUNATELY THE SOUND QUALITY IS VERY POOR. THESE OBVIOUSLY ARE NOT THE ORIGINAL MASTERS. I HAVE SEVERAL HIT COMPILATIONS OF PAT'S AND THE SOUND QUALITY IS FAR SUPERIOR. ON THIS "FOUR PLAY" THE SOUND IS FLAT AND THE HIGH END CRACKS UP A BIT. WHY WEREN'T THE HIGH QUALITY ORIGINAL MASTERS USED?"
BIG DISAPPOINTMENT

"What did PT do to deserve this kind of treatment? It's hard to believe how bad this thing sounds. On headphones, these discs are absolute audio hell, the crackling is unbearable. What are the people at Majestic Rock thinking? Is all their other product this bad? The only reason I gave it the extra star is because the packaging is kind of nice, and I like the idea of Pat's classic stuff all in one package. But something's gone horribly wrong here! These first four PT albums are total classics, and deserve to be available in listenable quality. Actually two of them are: Buy the 2003 Universal Records twofer of 'Putting It Straight' and 'Heat In The Street' for great sounding copies of those two LP's. As for the first two LP's, I wish Universal, or anybody (who owns the Polydor catalog?), would give those the same treatment."
