CD Reviews

You don't know Pat Metheny if you don't own Travels
04/19/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Simply stated: if you love Metheny & Mays, and you don't own this album, you are missing their best work, ever. The benefit of this album is that Metheny & Mays perform magnificently, live, and present some of their greatest works with virtuoso performances. Wichita Falls is splendid and takes on a life unkown in the same named album! San Lorenzo is mystical, so tender you come to know Pat's and Lyle's improvisational skills as you never suspected! But the best thing they have ever accomplished in any of their collaborations is their rendition of Are You Going With Me. They have never achieved such passionate, lyrical brilliance in any of their other work together as they do in the wailing masterpiece of unrequited love.
I have been listening to this album for at least 20 years and it is my hope that I live for at least another 20 (and more) but only with this music in my life. Extreme statement but this album has been that powerfully enjoyable to experience continuoulsy over the years. When I travel I usually take this album, Kind of Blue and any Bill Evans and Van Morrison along. A good group. Own Travels and your life will be better. Amazon should have this album rated as essential Metheny."
