CD Reviews

Bland -- neither poor nor wonderful

"Pat Metheny has been unfortunate in his choice of movies to write soundtracks for. None has been a blockbuster -- well, not here in the UK, anyway. I'm not even sure whether 'Passagio' or 'Map of the World' have been released here. But, the excellent 'Falcon and the Snowman' apart, Pat hasn't helped his bid for a really juicy movie contract. No-one can pretend that Pat is a great piano or drums player, and yet he plays both here. Indeed electronic keyboards dominate this album, as they do on so many of today's soundtracks. Why is it that when most movies cost over $20 million to make, the producer tries to get his soundtrack on the cheap, by bypassing the use of an orchestra?Pat needs either Lyle Mays or Charlie Haden to bring out the best of his extraordinary compositional talents, and sadly neither are employed here.I'm sure if I had been able to see the film, I would appreciate this CD much more. But I'm not altogether surprised that this CD is available only on import. For Geffen to decide not to release the album in this country, given Metheny's huge fan base, the label must have had a very low opinion of the soundtrack."

"A terrific mellow side of Pat Metheny. If you liked the soundtrack for Map of the World, you will love this CD."

"I was looking through Amazon.com and found this CD,another
Pat cd!!!! Wow!!! I had read it was compared Pat's solo album.
This is good , that Pat plays all the instruments, the bad thing is it has a re-occuring line that is heard all the way through this CD,which kinda gets old. I commend Pat for playing all the instruments, but just does not have that "Metheny magic" as displayed in other CDs................"
