This is a Keeper!

"Who would think that a recording of Stravinsky's seminal work by a provincial orchestra under the direction of a virtually unknown conductor (I Googled his name and the best I could find is that he was a highly respected and influential artist in his native Bulgaria) could possibly be competitive with the multitude of accounts already available? I certainly didn't, and oh, how wrong I was!

This is possibly the most raw, awesome and primeval performace of "The Rite of Spring" I know. Only Dorati's fiercer version with the Minneapolis Symphony on Mercury can rival it in its intensity and that recordings monaural sound does not allow for the full panoply of the orchestra's cry to resonate as it does here in the Plovdiv's stentorian performance. Petkov's vision is so intune with the ancient mysteries of Stravinsky's masterpiece that it impresses more than even the composer's own celebrated recording on Sony, and that is a CD that belongs in every collection. So does that make this issue even more necesssary? As far as I'm concerned, a resounding YES!

Sandor Vegh's account of "Apollon Musagete" is finely-tuned, well thought out and consistently satisfying. Another of Stravinsky's appealing neo-classical ballet scores, it has never reached the popularity of his earlier works but remains a delightful and worthy addition to any classical music library.

So I can recommend this CD on two counts - if you are looking for a great recording of "The Rite of Spring" you'll also be getting a version of "Apollon" to rival the best. If you're seeking to add the latter to your growing Stravinsky collection don't hesitate because it's coupled with a work you may already have several times on your shelves, you will be getting a recording of "Rite" that is truly a revelation. And at this ridiculously low price what do you have to lose? Only caveat, no notes, as is usual with all the other Laserlight "Passion" releases.

To sum it up - A MUST!"
