CD Reviews

Essential for all jazz collections
James A. Vedda | Alexandria, VA USA | 06/09/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In this reviewer's opinion, every jazz collection should have some Oscar Peterson. But if you browse what's available, you'll find dozens of CDs, presenting a difficult choice unless you can afford to buy all of them. If you're looking for a single CD that best represents Oscar's finest, I recommend choosing this one. You'll hear his fabulous technique and style on selections ranging from slow and mellow ("Smile," "Just Squeeze Me," "Wheatland") to jazz waltz ("Where Do We Go From Here") to his trademark flashiness ("Younger Than Springtime," "Soft Winds," "On the Trail").

An additional treat is the superb bass of Nils Orsted Pedersen, who gets plenty of room to stretch (including introducing the melody on the opening track, "Younger Than Springtime"). This is a match-up not to be missed.

After hearing this album, you'll undoubtedly want more. See my other reviews of Oscar's work."

"This is a fantastic record...back in print, so snatch it up!

Oscar is relaxed and tuneful and is beautifully accompanied by Nils Henning Orsted-Pederson and Louis Hayes. Well worth hearing."
Years of searching

"After searching for many years in used CD stores, I was pleased when I discovered this title on Amazon. As a long time admirer of Peterson's music, I wondered how this album could stand up to the Jazz In Paris set Peterson did with Stephane Grappelli (sp?)Jazz in Paris: Oscar Peterson-Stephanie Grapelli Quartet, Vol. 1. Great Connection is a great CD for a cool day in autumn when you feel like being lazy. I have listened to this CD numerous times over the past several weeks and I always seem to discover something new, different and exciting each time; five (5) stars to the Oscar Peterson Trio for a very powerful and moving recording."
