Synopsis

The best aspect of the Osborne Brothers' beautiful Hyden is that Pinecastle Records projects it as the first in a four-part anthology documenting the 40-year career of bluegrass fixtures Bobby and Sonny Osborne. Named after the brothers' hometown of Hyden, Kentucky, it features new recordings of older songs such as "Ruby," with a claw hammer banjo lick played by papa Robert and featuring Bobby's soaring tenor voice; "Picture on the Wall"; and "Great Speckled Bird," with Gene Wooten's Dobro out front. Newer tunes such as "A Child Again" and "Old Friend of Mine" sparkle and sound as if they've been in the Osborne show for years. Sonny's great Scruggs-style five-string banjo work and Bobby's mandolin lead a fine band, including Glen Duncan on fiddle, and leaves you eagerly awaiting the next volumes. --Brian Hollander

CD Reviews

Old time bluegrass as only Bobby and Sonny can play it.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is the first of a four part series documenting the long and illustrious careers of the Osborne Brothers. Each song selected for this CD is typical of the style of bluegrass that made these two talented brothers from rural Kentucky, members of the Bluegrass Hall of Fame. And since all of their work is true to the roots of bluegrass music, we can rest assured that the three CD's to follow will be just as good as this first installment."
