CD Reviews

Beautiful Borodin
Mr Russell S. Wollman | Fairfield, Iowa United States | 10/20/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Though this set does not include Borodin's lovely string quartets, it contains more than enough to please the most ardent Borodin enthusiast. The symphonies are so well played that no other versions I've heard can compare. One assessment of Borodin's music I once read made reference to his "latent muscularity". The timing and pace of the symphonies does complete justice to that quality. Also very apparent in these works is the orchestral brightness unique to the man's work. Even though I love all the great music, I find that too much Mozart, for example, can become tiring. Borodin never wears thin, perhaps because there's so much air and space and breadth in all his work. And everything he wrote is suffused with a delicate beauty that speaks volumes about the value of hanging out with your best musical friends in dogged determination to forge a new style without the "benefit" of formal education.

Borodin was blessed with a rare and sweet genius, and he will continue to bestow that on those who are lucky enough to love him and his work. I have two of this set, and I'm going to keep them both as long as I remain on this planet."
The Best Performances of Borodin's music ever

"This is all the Borodin you'll ever need,

can't go wrong with this recording. Maestro

Jarvi is a specialist on Russian music."
Nice collection

"These discs present a good option for one's introduction to Borodin's music. The Gothenburg symphony plays quite well, although they are not at the level of the top orchestras. The rare flub should not deter anyone from buying this, as they really are quite small and rare. I like Neeme Jarvi's interpretation for i feel that he is best with scandinavian and russian music. The sound is also good, as one would expect from DG, but it's nothing extraordinary. Overall, this is a very good collection."
