CD Reviews

The Velocity of Me at the Time of My Conversion
Matthew Seeley | Albany, NY United States | 02/11/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Stars Too Small to Use is one of the rawest and most immediate records I have ever heard. From the punk-rockers-with-acoustic-guitars energy of the opener, "Kathy Keller," to the visceral harmonies and cerebral lyrics of "The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion," Okkervil River open their hearts, minds and basement doors with songs exploring darkness and loss in beautiful ways. Largely just acoustic guitar, bass and drums, with rough harmonies and frequent, pained shouting in the background, this is a simply produced and powerful album that should appeal not only to alt-country, folk, and indie fans in general, but anyone who likes smart songs and sincere music played with passion and abandon."
I am not worthy to write about such a great band!

"Since I think that Okkervil River is genius, it is difficult to write a review for them. Nothing could do the band justice, but I will try because their music deserves to be promoted. Okkervil River is not for everyone. People that listen to music with their souls should listen to Okkervil River (and only people that listen to music with their souls know what the heck I mean by this statement.) It is complex and deep and moving. If you have lost faith that good music is still being created, listen to Okkervil River."
