CD Reviews

Smart (and yes, a little slow) punk rawk.
Marc A. Coignard | Denver, CO United States | 09/24/1999

"People keep mentioning how slow this album is and I get the impression they're saying they like it because they think they should, OR they're saying they don't like it because they think they're not supposed to. Either way, why dwell on the fact that it isn't as fast as their other stuff? Sure, some of the songs aren't as catchy as on previous releases, but it is still a great album. And the lyrics are probably some of the best written that I've seen, especially on tracks like DROP THE WORLD, and the haunting suburban drama, BLACK AND WHITE. I also think that FREEDOM LIKE A SHOPPING CART is one of NOFX's best songs, although I can well guess that I'm the only person who thinks it's that great."
Yup, it's a little different, but it's GREAT

"Everyone thinks this CD was a sell out, but I actually listen to it more than any of my other NOFX CDs. Not that this is elevator muzak by any means, but sometimes your ears need a lil break from the sonic stuff NOFX usually puts out. If I had a band, this is what we'd sound like."
It isn't horrible, it just isn't Punk in Drublic

"Whats the deal with these "fans" who say, "I'm so sick of NOFX, they always sound the same" yet when NOFX does some experimenting (Heavy Petting Zoo) all of a sudden it's "This is TOO different, TOO poppy". Oh shut up! The only reason this LP gets a bad rep is because it followed Punk In Drublic (the essential NOFX). First off, bands that remake the [same stuff] and end up [horrible] in the end-- look what happened to Pennywise; second if you want some real pop look what happened to Bad Religon. NOFX have done a great job at churning out good album after good album, Heavy Petting Zoo is no exception. Best tracks include Hobophobic, Whatever Didi Wants, Hot Dog, and Love Story."
