This eclectic collection of piano music by American composers, each with a different musical influence and background covers a wide range of styles of American music.Pianist, Noëlle Compinsky Tinturin delivers a stylish performance on this new CD titled "American Portrait," which includes styles from classical to ragtime and jazz. A "salon-style" piece (Berceuse) and a concert piece from the West Indies (Souvenir of Havana) by Louis Moreau Gottshalk open the program.The collection includes well-known American piano classics such as Gershwin's "Three Preludes for Piano" and a lively set of rags by Scott Joplin, Tom Turpin, William Bolcom, and John Novacek.Tinturin performs ten of the "Children's Songs" by the immensely talented jazz keyboardist and composer, Chick Corea (b. 1941), whose contribution to American jazz is legendary.Two new pieces by Noëlle's father-in-law, Peter Tinturin (1910-2007), are included. "Tango," a whimsical "gumdrop" is reminiscent of Tinturin's film scores, and reflects the composer's sly humor. "Mirage" is a sentimental miniature in the Russian Romantic style.The CD includes two bonus tracks featuring Noëlle's daughter, Celine Gietzen on cello. They perform an arrangement of Tinturin's "Tango" for cello and piano, and "Night on the Pampa," a beautiful, dark and sensuous piece in the Argentine style by Pauline Delmonte.Noëlle recorded this collection with two goals in mind: to present some wonderful piano music by some of the most imaginative American composers, and to play enjoyable music that offers a wide appeal.This superb American collection has been described as "Elegant, rhythmically alert playing from Noëlle Tinturin, who deserves special kudos for her fascinating programming."
