Ned Rothenberg has gathered for his nonet some of the top musicians of the new york avantgarde, such as Freidlander, Douglas, Dresser, Sarin... and they come together greatly to show just how good good avantgarde sounds. The feel of brilliant orchestration is present in all the pieces, but the pieces go beyond being only excellent compositions and truly come to life due to the creative vision and intuition of all the musicians and their talent for improvisation. Rothenberg has great tone and technique, and he brings out some of the most substatial playing in his cohorts. It's hard to gor wrong with an avantgarde setting of saxophones, clarinets, trombone, trumpet, cello, violin, viola, dresser on bass and drums." |
