Synopsis

Album Description
This CD presents rarely heard music of Alan Shulman in performances by one of the country's great orchestras- the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Like the music of his contemporaries- Morton Gould and Leonard Bernstein, Alan Shulman's music reflects the "gritty, urban style" popular in New York in the ?40s and ?50s. None of Shulman's orchestral works were recorded. They were, however, performed by virtually every major American symphony orchestra, and conducted by such luminaries as Barbirolli, Mitropoulos, Dorati, Fiedler, Ozawa and Levine. A member of the NBC Symphony, Shulman's music was frequently performed by that orchestra. Highlights of this CD include Leonard Bernstein's impassioned performance of Shulman's arrangement of the Israeli National Anthem, Hatikvah; Emanuel Vardi's lush performance of Theme and Variations for Viola and Orchestra; Guido Cantelli's reading of A Laurentian Overture; and Shulman's buoyant Waltzes for Orchestra.
