CD Reviews

Wonderful Selections and Great Sound!
Doug - Haydn Fan | California | 09/18/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Anyone not familiar with Muggsy Spanier should try this album. While there are some duplications the playing projects a joyful upbeat thrill coupled with far better musicianship than recent revival groups display.

I can't emphasize enough the quality of the sound - truly outstanding!

Spanier calls it Ragtime, but it's really Dixieland, and revival playing at that by the time these records were made starting in 1939 and ending in 1944. If you enjoy Dixieland you'll probably think you've died and gone to heaven. Many of the musicians are first rate, and Spanier leads them well. Fans of Lee Wiley should note she has a couple cuts from a rare Commodore 1940 on this album, "Down to Steamboat Tennessee" and the ubiquitous "Sugar". Should you be curious what the big deal is this is an excellent better sounding version of the twenties originals, and probably more in touch than today's new replications by what all too frequently sounds to me like less-gifted musicians.

A delightful CD!"
