Synopsis

Album Description
The main aim of the SWR Symphony Orchestra since its foundation in 1946 has been to increase audience awareness not only of the symphonic repertoire of the past two centuries, but also of the music 20th century. Apart from its four chief conductors--Hans Rosbaud, Ernest Bour, Kazimierz Kord, and Michael Gielen--the orchestra has worked on a regular basis with conductors such as Sir John Barbirolli, Karl Böhm, Pierre Boulez, Ferenc Fricsay, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and Sir Georg Solti. Michael Gielen has been Chief Conductor of the Royal Opera Stockholm, the Orchestre National de Belgique, and the Netherlands Opera, as well as Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC in London. He is a frequent guest conductor with all the major European and American orchestras.
