Robert Levin's Mozart concerto series continues with great success. Again he improvises his own cadenzas to the Concertos, just as Mozart would have done, and decorates the written text with little embellishments and flourishes. Most of the time, though, he just plays what Mozart wrote, bringing it to life with his animated and intelligent playing. There are already two sets of Mozart piano concertos on period instruments in the catalog. Malcolm Bilson's (Archiv) is wonderful, and although I haven't heard Jos van Immerseel's (Channel Classics), I'm told it's also very good. But if you can't splurge on Mozart, what's money good for? --Leslie Gerber

If you Love Mozart, You Must Hear Robert Levin
Paul S. Rottenberg | Ft. Lauderdale, FL | 12/24/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This cd, which contains two of Mozart's finest piano concerti from his pre-Vienna days, will get your attention. Excellently played by the superb Robert Levin on a fortepiano, which is better suited to Mozart's music than a large modern instrument, and perfectly supported by Christopher Hogwood's well-known orchestra, this is a cd to please the Mozart lover looking for a performance reflecting what Mozart had in mind when he wrote this music."
