Lowwell Greer and Nicholas McGegan offer these horn concertos on period instruments. Greer is an excellent musician and he gives lively accounts of the solos, though his playing shows more splatter and is less smooth-toned than Brown's. The Philharmonia Baroque, smaller than the Enlightenment ensemble, possesses a dry, wiry sound and great agility, which makes for leaner textures and remarkably lively realizations, even though the style of playing seems rather steeply inclined toward the baroque. The sound is analog, by choice, and very fine. --Ted Libbey
