4 1/2 - and that's only for style
Biblibio | 09/19/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It cannot be argued that James Galway is not one of today's foremost flute players. It can, however, be argued whether or not his playing sounds nice to the ear. It's debatable - some view his tone to be obtrusive and overshadowing, others find it perfectly flawless. It's a matter of taste. Do you like his style, or not?

Well, in this case it's quite important. Mozart's concerto for flute and harp is possibly one of the most gorgeous pieces out there, just like Mozart with the sweet tones and the "pretty" aspect. And the playing is certainly beautiful, with the lovely sound of the flute blending in with that of the harp. We're also given two other dishes - sonatas. "Violin" sonatas, but done on the flute. For those violin lovers out there, trust me - the flute doesn't ruin the piece.

Mostly, though, it comes down to a choice. If you're not particularly fond of Galway's sound or the way he plays, maybe this isn't the Mozart recording for you. There are numerous recordings of the concerto (and the other concertos as well). If you enjoy Galway then you're bound to like this disc. For newcomers, you're urged to check this out as well. It's beautiful music, wonderfully played, with a great sound. Overall, you can't really go wrong.

Perhaps not my favorite CD of Mozart flute concertos, but certainly recommended."

"Don't be fooled by Amazon's labelling: Galway plays the flute throughout this album. Overall it can be recommended. The sound is good and K299 is really great. I was somewhat indifferent to the other pieces which were pleasant but less interesting. Sound is good on this CD as well. There may be a better coupling for K299 out there however."
