CD Reviews

Great compliment to "The Ecstacy of the Moment" CD

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Continuing the exploration of Feldman's early writing career, this disc contains many hitherto unreleased and unpublished works. Included therein is Morty's only piece for magnetic tape, called "Intersection." This makes a fine companion to Earle Brown's "Octet" (found on the hatArt disc, The New York School 2). The following piece, "Nature Pieces," shows Feldman at times sounding very close to early John Cage (don't believe me? Compare the first and third pieces to Cage's "Metamorphesis" with its walking, meandering figures; the fourth and "Dream" with its soft modal melody and saturation from the pedal). As a special bonus, the audio portion to a film about Jackson Pollock is also included, with music for two 'cellists by Feldman. Pollock speaks in the film as well. All of the performances are great and goes along with the Barton Ensemble disc very well. It will only be a matter of time before every work by Feldman gets attention and recorded."
