CD Reviews

Finally available on CD! One of Miles' best!

"I have hunted for years for the LP 'Jazz Track' by Miles, a LONG out-of-print Columbia LP. One side is devoted to the score from 'Elevator To The Gallows', a French 'noir' film, also highly recommended. I guarantee once you have heard this 'snippet' of the music from the film you will want the FULL CD with alternate takes. I think it's one of Miles' best works. The rest of the LP is the 'Kind Of Blue' line-up with some sessions from 1958 (also available on CD as " '58 Miles ". The opening of 'On Green Dolphin Street' by Bill Evans is worth the price of admission alone. Just those few bars haunt me; I could, and have, listened to them over and over numerous times. I have worn-out copies of the original LP that I have found at flea markets, garage sales, etc. The CD is a must-have. All the best to you, Miles fans!"
Muted Magic

""Jazz Track" is as Playboy says: "there are no bad Miles Davis albums". On this album there are a couple of tunes with Miles playing the muted trumpet up tempo. One criticism I have of Miles is he didn't play enough up tempo tunes with the mute. Sur l'autoroute Julien dans l'ascenseur and Evasion de Julien are muted magic. They alone are worth the cost of this music."
FINALLY!!

"The period 1954-1964 was one in which Miles put out an awful lot of excellent work. As Ian Carr's superb biography points out, 1958 was a year when Davis couldn't put a foot wrong. SOMETHIN' ELSE w. Cannonball Adderley, MILESTONES, the American half of JAZZ TRACK, LEGRAND JAZZ and PORGY & BESS comprised the entirety of his studio work that year. Now, after a LONG wait, JAZZ TRACK has finally been re-constituted in its original form, along with some welcome additions. 75 minutes of content, and the processing is also quite respectable, with the slight caveat that the French soundtrack work is showing its age a little.

The track listing is accurate -- as far as it goes -- but neglects to mention the inclusion of this powerful sextet's 11-minute rendering of "Love for Sale" (Cannonball really rips it on that one) & 3 delightful quintet sides with Sonny Rollins from 1956 (the old Prestige album COLLECTOR'S ITEMS). The whole disc is just a delight."
