CD Reviews

+1/2 -- First issue of early-90s recordings
hyperbolium | Earth, USA | 07/08/2003
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Gilley's first album of new material since 1988's "With Love from Pasadena, Texas" is really a continuation of his '80s recordings for Epic. Originally waxed in the early-90s, shortly after leaving Epic, these sessions were shelved amid his new label's collapse. Rescued from the vaults, they find Gilley continuing the urban cowboy crossover path that made him famous. The album leans heavily on MOR ballads, perking up slightly for the tropically themed "I Didn't Know Your memory Loved Jamaica," the light honky-tonk gospel of "Sadly Ever After," and George Strait's mid-tempo "Sure Got This Old Redneck Feeling Blue."Recorded a decade ago, these tapes aren't breaking any new ground. But the lack of booming drums and loud guitars does provide a merciful break from today's country radio standards, and Matthew Miles reproduction lends a contemporary shine. Those who can't make it to Branson to catch a contemporary helping of Gilley's live show will certainly enjoy this long-lost look at his post-Epic years.3-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings."
