CD Reviews

One of Feinstein's very best works!
Bill Corfield | Dayton, OH | 12/21/1999

"A wonderful combination of two very talented men. Great performances all around, especially pleasing duets, and fresh, revised lyrics by Jerry Herman. No big production numbers, but wow, the quality of these two is hard to beat!"
A delightful album

"I am not the biggest Jerry Herman fan on the planet by a long shot, but this is a wonderful CD. I do love Michael Feinstein and here he is at his best, accompanied by the composer who certainly has a good idea of how these songs should go. I agree with another reviewer, both Feinstein and Herman are having FUN at the recording session and it jumps out at you from the speakers. Michael Feinstein is in his very very best voice here, the vocals are the equal of anything else he has done. Is it my imagination, or has he improved as a singer over the years? No matter, he is wonderful here. One thing I liked is that there are two songs from shows not by Jerry Herman (A day in Hollywood/a Night in the Ukrane and Ben Franklin in Paris) that he contributed to, albeit surruptiously. Interestingly, his contributions are the best songs in their respective scores (Just Go to the Movies and To Be Alone with You). Add to that groups of songs from Hello Dolly and Mame and you begin to realize that people like me underappreciate Mr. Herman, he is much more talented than I have given him credit for. This is a teriffic CD, one of the best Michael Feinstein CDs ever, but to be honest all the composer CDs (Burton Lane I and II, Jule Styne, Hugh Martin bring out his best."
Unique and listenable over and over

"I am an enthusiastic Michael Feinstein fan and own most of his music. I think I play this one more than any others - Jerry Herman sings with him on three of the songs and they are great. Michael's voice is strong and the absence of orchestral accompaniment (piano only) is actually refreshing. Lots of fun and some tunes I've never heard before, but have grown to love."
