This recording is worth every second you listen to it.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"After the last two recordings of Bach's Christmas Oratorio (1991) and the Mass in B Minor (1994) Karl-Friedrich Beringer and the Windsbacher Knabenchor now have a very fine piece of performing arts just delivered in the shops. Mendelssohn's seldomly performed Symphony No.2 - which like Beethoven's 9th in fact is more a mixture between a symphony and an oratorio - is mainly dominated by instrumental or soloist parts. The choir is the musical partner performing the 5 chorales with great density. An even better performance is given by the choir's tenors and basses in Brahms' Alt-Rhapsody where the boys take over the melody from the woman's Alto and bring it to an heart moving expression. The absolute highlight and the best I've ever heard by this choir are the 6 a cappella compositions for 4 and 8 voices on the second disc. The dynamic is breathtaking and the clearness of the choir's intonation in combination with the musical expression - the youngest boys are only 9 years old (!) - makes this recording worth every second you listen to it. The sound of the recording is superb. Especially the a cappella tracks have this wonderful depth and warm reverbation you only can reach in the natural acoustics of old churches."
