An Absolute Shining Gem!!
Richard Falgione | U S A | 05/28/2008

"Mel Tormé sings and shines on this CD. The songs, love songs and ballads, are all beautifully arranged and lovingly played, and the remastering allows all the warmth and loveliness of the backing players to sparkle. But it is Mel's impeccable sensibilities and exceptional sensitivity as a singer that bring the most beauty to this recording. My personal favorite, "The Folks That Live On The Hill" is paced at a slower tempo than usual (as are most of the songs on this CD), allowing Mel and the Robert Mersey arrangement develop a fragile beauty from which a nostalgic, reflective emotion emerges.

This recording's tenor is mostly a slow, warm, soft ride through some of the most memorable songs and ballads in The Great American Songbook. The distinctive character of each song allows Mel inimitable treatment of each, showing his depth, range and versatility. With songwriters such as Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer, the tunes are of definitive pedigree. And Mel Tormé, their definitive singer, brings each of them to their fullest, finest light.

What a treat!!

"My only references of Mel Tormé came from Harry Anderson's character in the sitcom "Night Court", in which he was a big fan of Tormé. That's how I became familiar to his voice and a few weeks ago I listened to him in a re-run of "Everwood", so I got curious and decided to buy some record of him. I chose this one and; boy what a pleasant surprise!. Tormé's performances in this album are all great. "That's all" must be one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard and he sings it with such tenderness and care that is a pure delight for your senses. So are "My Romance"; "Ho-Ba-La-La"; "The Nearness of You" or the classic " The Christmas Song" wich he wrote in 40 minutes!! This collection of songs oversees his entire career and it is true joy to seat back and listen to Mel, undoubtely one of the great vocalists of our time."
