Strong Debut

(3 out of 5 stars)

"'Watch it Happen' is the promising debut full-length from Philadelphia native Quentin Stolzfus and friends, and should be of interest to indie fans. The album has garnered deserved praise from critics, such as being named #1 single of the week by NME, though has yet to attract the fans of similiar bands, such as Apples in Stereo or Olivia Tremor Control. Firmly in the moody power pop tradition, Mazarin sports solid pop hooks and a keen sense of arrangement- a surprise considering Stolzfus' contribution on drums to avant drone band Azusa Plane in concert. The album's main virtue is its balance of superb production value, with layers of sound, and emotional content. While downbeat, the songs largely avoid self-pity, which gives them added punch due to uniqueness. Instead of focusing on failed relationships, Stolzfus suggests a larger world, and therefore increases the heart ache. 'Watch it Happen' is a solid and consistent album with good songs, though as a debut it is more suggestive of things to come than present rewards. Recommended."

"Grass roots Philadelphia. From the Khyber Pass to the Theater of the Living Arts, Mazarin always made for a exhilarating experience. This debut album is expertly produced, combining heartbreak emotion with raging chord upon chord. Watch It Happen had the substance to form the musical basis of a truly unforgettable philly romance(nevermind that it ended). I've just ordered their new release. Enjoy again and again. I have uncountable times..."
