Two Songs By Themselves are Enough to Justify Five Stars.

"Nasty confession: I was browsing Maynard in Itunes and sampled two tunes that just BLEW ME AWAY, 'Between Races' and 'No More Wood'. I barely listened to the other samples from "Magnitude", but these two are just wonderful, the former a bop-oriented tour de force that just smokes with passion, grace, and fire, the latter a soulful, almost elegiac ballad. Interestingly, Maynard does not draw the spotlight to himself on either of these marvelous compositions, but rather allows the overall tonality of the band to accomplish its mission. More prominent than any other soloist is the tenor sax, whom I fail to recognize--too bad I don't have the notes from the disc. I'm going to investigate this some more. $99.00 for the used copy from Marketplace is a bit steep even for an addict like me, so I'll have to satisfy myself with downloads from Itunes.
