Special Concert
L.A. SaxMan | Los Angeles, CA | 07/21/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is a musical performance that is very close to my heart. I had the great honor of being there for the live performance in Okinawa, Japan.

I was stationed in Okinawa as a US Marine Corps Band Saxophone player from year 2000-2003. I read in a poster and in the newspapers that Bennie Maupin was coming to perform in the Club Rhapsody Jazz Concert Series. I could not resist the opportunity to see and hear live, the great reedist who became known when he played on the Miles Davis "[...] Brew" album as well as Herbie Hancock's "Headhunters."

I went to the sight of the show with a good friend and we got to meet with and talk to Bennie Maupin and John B. Williams. We sat down and talked with them about music, an experience which had a great impact on my musical life. They are very distinguished gentlemen, and it was very insightful to be able to watch them and learn about music and life. I learned that John B. Williams, too, was a former Marine Musician.

The concert is superb, with great improvisations from all musicians. I especially enjoyed John B. Williams poetry, which he recited while playing the bass at the same time. There are no jazz standards here, all completely original compositions written by John B. Williams and Bennie Maupin, two musicians who have contributed great artistry to the world of Jazz."
